SEPTEMBER 29, 2024 ( HARTFORD, CT) | Throughout the month of September, the Theta Alpha Sigma Alumnae Chapter (TAS) of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. collected nearly 400 backpacks filled with school supplies to distribute to students across the Hartford community.
The donation of supplies falls under the sorority’s Operation Big Book Bag initiative, which encourages chapters to collect and donate educational materials, equipment and school supplies to address the needs, challenges and issues that face school-aged children who are educationally at-risk.
This year, the local chapter of the sorority served students at Grace Academy, Covenant PreparatoryAcademy, and Trinity Academy, where the students range from 1st to 8th grade. Each student received a backpack filled with items, including pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, rulers, crayons, and other educational necessities.
Donations to Operation Big Book Bag funneled through several different mediums, including community outreach, as many across social media invested in the event via monetary donations or an in-kind shipment of supplies. The chapter also secured several corporate sponsors, such as Nike, who provided 50 backpacks and the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, who sponsored 150 backpacks already stuffed with additional school supplies.
In addition to assisting the students, Theta Alpha Sigma also supported two educators by contributing supplies for their classrooms. Ms. Olivia Jenkins, first grade teacher at Thelma Ellis Dickerson Jumoke Academy and Soror Amari Hall, middle school math teacher in the New Haven Public School system both received classroom care packages that included multiple packs of loose leaf paper, pencil pouches, 200 pencils and more.
Operation Big Book Bag is an annual initiative of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and one of the organization’s five essential programs.
